Bebo Valdés Dies at 94

Pioneering Cuban musician Bebo Valdés, a pianist, bandleader, arranger and composer, died on March 23 in Stockholm of complications from pneumonia. Valdés was a major force in melding traditional Afro-Cuban dance rhythms with American jazz, creating a whole new vocabulary for the improvisatory form. Valdés was a multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy winner, and spent recent years living in Benalmádena, Spain. He also suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
