DC Jazz Festival Announces Partnership With City Winery

May 2, 2018

The DC Jazz Festival (DCJF) has announced a new mainstage partnership with City Winery, launching with the DC JazzFest presented by Events DC Opening Ceremony on June 7. The evening will feature the amazing harmonica master, Frederic Yonnet with special guest Maimouna Youssef, and the Washington Renaissance Orchestra Octet, a very special unit of some of DC’s finest, under the musical direction of drummer-composer and 2018 DC Jazz Festival Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Nasar Abadey.

“DCJF is excited to launch the festival in Ivy City at the new City Winery,” said Sunny Sumter, DCJF executive director. “City Winery’s brand of combining a functioning winery with intimate concerts, special events and fine dining makes it the perfect opening experience for the DC JazzFest.”

Urban jazz harmonicist Frédéric Yonnet, fresh off touring with renowned comic Dave Chappelle, makes his return to the DC Jazz Festival stage at the new DC City Winery nightspot. Yonnet has collaborated with Hall-of-Famer Stevie Wonder among his many fruitful affiliations, which run the stylistic gamut from Prince, India.Arie, and John Mayer to The National Symphony Orchestra.  His approach to the instrument encompasses funk, rock, hip-hop, gospel, blues and jazz that will open DC JazzFest with high energy panache.

“Yonnet is the kind of jazz-informed artist who delivers a brand of high energy and deeply masterful artistry that is a hallmark of DC JazzFest.  We are very pleased to have him open our 2018 festival with the kind of seismic bang our audiences have come to expect,” said Willard Jenkins, DCJF artistic director.
