DC Jazz Festival Finale Celebrates Great Masters Of Jazz

DC Jazz Festival, in collaboration with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and part of DC JazzFest presented by Events DC, will present Great Masters of Jazz, honoring the life and work of Quincy Jones, Nancy Wilson, Shirley Horn, and Roy Hargrove (June 16); and Celebrating Randy Weston (June 9), a piano showcase in recognition of Randy Weston.

Great Masters of Jazz celebrates the life and work of iconic legend Quincy Jones; highly influential song stylist Nancy Wilson; trailblazing trumpeter Roy Hargrove, and DC’s own peerless pianist-vocalist Shirley Horn (Kennedy Center Concert Hall). Featured performers/presenters include Roy Hargrove Big Band, Patti Austin, Justin Kauflin, Adam Clayton Powell III, Congressman John Lewis, Angela Stribbling, Sharón Clark, and special guests to be announced.

DCJF will bestow its annual Lifetime Achievement Award to Quincy Jones and DC saxophonist/educator Fred Foss. Past award recipients include Chucho Valdes, Nasar Abadey, Billy Hart, Sadao Watanabe, Roy Haynes, Ron Carter, Kenny Barron, James Moody, Ellis Marsalis, George Wein, Buck Hill, Hank Jones, Clark Terry, Billy Taylor, and Dave Brubeck.

Celebrating Randy Weston (Kennedy Center Family Theater) will include stellar pianists Marc Cary and Rodney Kendrick joined by members of Weston’s acclaimed African Rhythms band: bassist Alex Blake, saxophonist TK Blue, and African percussionist Neil Clarke.
