NEC Launches Summer Jazz Lab

March 8, 2013

New England Conservatory’s Jazz Lab is designed as a program for students ages 14 – 18 of all proficiency levels from all over the country and abroad. Jazz Lab promises musical and personal growth in a week-long immersion in ensemble performance, improvisation, small group training, jam sessions, entrepreneurial workshops, and college audition prep.  Instrumentalists and vocalists are welcome, as are small ensembles. No pre-audition is required. The program takes place Sunday, June 23 – Friday, June 28 and both day and overnight students are welcome.

Students will meet and work with NEC’s premiere jazz faculty including Ken Schaphorst, Dominique Eade, Joe Morris and Rakalam Bob Moses, as well as SCE jazz department chairs David Zoffer and Rick McLaughlin.  Faculty and guest artists will perform each evening and lead jam sessions for all levels throughout the week.  Students will be performing in Jordan Hall, a national historic landmark, and one of the most acoustically perfect venues in the U.S.

The week will feature seminars in entrepreneurship and training for careers in music.  Faculty will counsel students on how to apply to conservatories, schools of music and universities; what to look for and what you can expect; and techniques for a successful audition.
