The Jazz Composers Collective Festival, held at New York’s Jazz Standard last week, premiered five never-recorded works of legendary composer Herbie Nichols, who died in 1963. The works were discovered in a trunk that had been passed down through Nichols’s family for years (they had previously been believed lost or destroyed).  Personnel on hand for the performances included Ron Horton, Ted Nash, Michael Blake, Frank Kimbrough, Ben Allison, and Michael Sarin.
