Samba Meets Jazz Workshops Announced for Spring in Rio de Janeiro

Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, which will host 2013’s “Samba Meets Jazz” workshops.

Hobbyists, educators and students from U.S., Brazil and Europe will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in jazz and Brazilian music studies this spring, March 23 – 30. The workshops take place in Rio de Janeiro, the capital of Samba and Bossa Nova!

The program is directed by Trio da Paz bassist Nilson Matta, who has performed with diverse music greats from João Gilberto to Yo Yo Ma, will offer students an opportunity to study with iconic Brazilian composer Ivan Lins, along with other renown Brazilian musicians:  Alfredo Cardim (piano), Pascoal Meirelles (drums/percussion), Muiza Adnet (vocals).  Joining them will be New York-based saxophonist/composer/bandleader Mike DiRubbo, a powerful young New York-based alto player. The week-long immersion will culminate with participant vocalists and instrumentalists performing at one of Rio’s jazz clubs.
