The DC Jazz Festival (DCJF) has announced the three bands chosen as the 2019 DCJazzPrix finalists, all of whom will perform Saturday, June 15 at the DCJazzPrix Finals at Pearl Street Warehouse, 33 Pearl Street, SW, part of DC JazzFest presented by Events DC. The finalists are: Ernest Turner Trio, Amy/Ana, and MIXCLA+1,

DCJazzPrix was launched in 2016 and since then has received a rapidly growing and diverse applicant response. The Jury considered a highly competitive pool of applicants (age parameters: 18-42) and evaluated these gifted emerging bands for artistic quality and merit.

Each band will receive benefits inherently associated with a major jazz festival performance opportunity, and will compete at the DCJazzPrix Finals at the DC JazzFest at The Wharf. DC JazzFest audience response will be a factor in the Jury’s determination of the winner. Aside from gaining significant exposure, the winner will also be awarded a $15,000 cash prize and benefit from a year-long association with the DC Jazz Festival to assist in their professional development, and business support, as well as a compensated main stage DC Jazz Festival 2020 performance.

“The interaction of musicians in a band context is at the core of the jazz ethic. It is exciting to help ‘discover’ and promote the careers of emerging jazz artists committed to the creative and professional development of their excellent bands,” said DC Jazz Festival executive director Sunny Sumter. “DCJazzPrix is unique in that it recognizes bands over soloists. It allows jazz artists to concentrate on band development on multiple fronts, increase performance opportunities, and sustain their collective output.”
