BrianWilsonThis year, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is proud to present the Montreal Jazz Festival Spirit Award to the “Mozart of pop-rock”: Brian Wilson. The award was presented to him by André Ménard, vice president and co-founder of the Festival, in a private meeting.

Brian Wilson will be the ninth artist to receive the Montreal Jazz Festival Spirit Award. Created especially on the occasion of the 27th edition of the Festival, in 2006, this special award underlines a popular artist’s extraordinary contribution to the musical world.

“Mozart of pop-rock”: that’s how the ’60s press nicknamed the young Californian behind the Beach Boys. The songwriter responsible for such universal classics as I Get AroundSurfin’ U.S.A.Wouldn’t It Be Nice and Good Vibrations founded the Beach Boys in 1961 with his brothers Dennis and Carl, his cousin Mike Love and his school pal Al Jardine. Upon its release in 1966, Pet Sounds was immediately heralded as one of the most important albums of all time, opening a new era that contained the entire future of pop-rock. In its wake, the Beach Boys cast a major influence over a multitude of artists, captivating the entire planet. In 1988, Wilson launched a solo career, recording 11 albums and touring the world. His most famous solo albums include Imagination, his 4th release in 1989, which was hailed by critics and sparked the singer to return to live performance after a long absence, as well as No Pier Pressure, his 11th album, released in 2015, which he created with former collaborators Al Jardine, David Marks and Blondie Chaplin. With his extraordinary life story, Brian Wilson a helped weave the dream of a carefree, idealistic era, creating a legendary and eternal body of work.

July 7, Brian Wilson presents Pet Sounds, 50th anniversairy, with special guests Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin, at 7:30 p.m. in Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA(Événement spéciaux TD series).
