Share This:

The DC Jazz Fest has announced that it will return to the historic Howard Theatre for the 2017 festival.

“We’re thrilled to continue building on The Howard Theatre’s storied jazz legacy, which includes icons like Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and many more,” said Chip Ellis, the Howard Theatre developer and principal. “We applaud DC JazzFest for their huge contribution to the jazz genre and look forward to a long and fruitful partnership.”

The DC JazzFest’s opening ceremony on June 9 will also be at the Howard Theatre, featuring Grammy-winning vocalist Lalah Hathaway. Hathaway will be making her debut appearance at the DC Jazz Festival.

“We are pleased to add Lalah Hathaway’s richly evocative voice to our Howard Theatre lineup, and the cornucopia of exceptional voices we’re featuring on our 2017 festival,” said DC JazzFest artistic director Willard Jenkins.

Other performers who will take the stage at the Howard Theatre this summer for DC JazzFest include Roy Haynes Fountain of Youth Band & the Ron Carter-Russell Malone Duo, both recipients of DC Jazz Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and Hiromi and Edmar Castañeda.

“The Howard Theatre has a wonderful music history, especially with jazz, and provides the perfect complement for DC JazzFest,” said Sunny Sumter, executive director for the DC Jazz Festival.
