DC Jazz Festival Crowns Third Annual DCJazzPrix Winner, The Cornerstore

The DC Jazz Festival (DCJF) has introduced The Cornerstore as the third annual DC JazzPrix winning band, selected following a competitive international final that took place as part of the recently completed 14th annual DC JazzFest presented by Events DC at DC JazzFest at The Wharf.

The Cornerstore, based in Baltimore and regulars on the DMV jazz circuit, competed in the finals, Saturday, June 16, against four impressive fellow finalists: Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead (NYC), Emmet Cohen Trio (NYC), Roxy Coss Quintet (NYC), and the LRK Trio (Moscow, Russia). All five bands presented exceptional 20-minute sets, thrilling the packed house and significantly raising the degree of difficulty for judges’ deliberations. Additionally, audience participation, through a special text messaging voting process, helped push The Cornerstore into the winner’s circle.

“We are thrilled to have very successfully completed our third DCJazzPrix, which this year became an international competition, adding even more cultural diversity to the DC Jazz Festival’s burgeoning global offerings. DCJazzPrix is designed to help launch and promote the careers of emerging jazz ensembles,” said DCJF executive director Sunny Sumter. “All five finalist bands were extremely impressive, which made for a difficult adjudication. We look forward to working further with the excellent musicians who comprise The Cornerstore, an inventive trio clearly poised for a raised profile and greater exposure.”

In addition to a $15,000 cash prize, The Cornerstore has earned a year-long association with the DCJF for professional development consultation, business support and a mainstage 2019 DC JazzFest engagement.
