Justice for Jazz Artists Protest While Village Vanguard Receives Jazz Masters Award

Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians members and the Justice for Jazz Artists campaign gathered outside of Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Lincoln Center during a Jazz Masters Awards presentation of to Village Vanguard owner Lorraine Gordon to protest Gordon’s interactions with the union. The group passed out leaflets to passers-by outside the even spoke to members of the press. Justice for Jazz Artists has demanded that the Vanguard contribute approximately $19,000 annually to the American Federation of Musicians and Employer’s Pension Fund.

Justice for Jazz Artists is endorsed by several past NEA Jazz Masters, including Nat Hentoff, Paquito D’ Rivera, Phil Woods, Ron Carter and Jimmy Owens. Owens, who was 2012’s awardee, gave an impassioned speech while accepting the award in which he advocated for the aims of the Justice for Jazz Artists campaign.
