LA Jazz Society Plans 30th Anniversary Jazz Tribute Awards for Oct. 27

It will be a family affair when the Los Angeles Jazz Society pays tribute to Latin jazz artists Sheila E., her father, Pete, and brothers Juan and Peter Michael Escovedo at the Society’s 30th Anniversary Jazz Tribute Awards Dinner and Concert at the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City on Sunday, Oct. 27. The dynamic musical family has been selected as the Society’s 2013 Jazz Honoree. Famed jazz and classical music flutist and saxophonist Hubert Laws will be presented with the L. A. Jazz Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Film critic, historian and jazz aficionado, Leonard Maltin will again serve as host/emcee of the Jazz Tribute Awards Dinner and Concert. Hugh Hefner is the Honorary 30th Anniversary Tribute Chair and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is the Honorary Dinner Chair.

The Jazz Tribute Awards Dinner and Concert is the primary fundraiser for the nonprofit Los Angeles Jazz Society’s highly respected jazz education programs that benefit thousands of students in the Los Angeles Unified School District annually. This year’s Jazz Educator Award will recognize the talents of the leaders of the Jazz in Schools Program Ernie Fields, Jr., Charles Owens, and Maestro Delbert Taylor. The Society will present its Shelly Manne Memorial New Talent Award to 14 year-old drummer sensation, Alex Smith.

Music will dominate the evening with performances by Sheila E., Pete Escovedo, Peter Michael Escovedo, Juan Escovedo and the Band, the Hubert Laws Trio, Alex Smith Trio, and Charlie Owens, Maestro Delbert Taylor and Combo.
