Jazz drummer Lawrence “Lo” Leathers passed away unexpectedly on June 2 in the Bronx, New York.

He was pronounced dead at the scene when police found him in the hallway of an apartment building. According to the Associated Press, Leathers was “involved in a physical dispute” with Lisa Harris, who he shared an apartment with, and another man, who reportedly put Leathers in a chokehold.

Leathers was 37.

Born November 23, 1981, Leathers grew up in Michigan, first taking an interest in the drums when he saw them in a church band. As a young adult, he went to school at Michigan State University’s School of Music and the Julliard School in New York. However, after studying at Julliard for two years, he left to work on being a full-time musician.

He would go on to win two Grammy Awards as a member of the Aaron Diehl Trio.  The jazz community mourns his unexpected passing.
