Melvin Rhyne (1936-2013)

Renowned organist and Wes Montgomery collaborator Melvin Rhyne died of lung cancer on March 5 at age 76. He was in his hometown of Indianapolis.

Rhyne is best known for his work on four spectacular Riverside albums with Wes Montgomery in the early ‘60s.  They include The Wes Montgomery Trio (1959), Boss Guitar (1963), and Portrait of Wes (1963) and feature timeless guitar-organ-drums interaction. Rhyne reportedly played often at Milwaukee clubs like Brother’s Lounge and the Main Event. He taught privately and served as musician-in-residence at Malcolm X Academy in 1995.
