Mulgrew Miller, 1955-2013

Share This:

Renowned jazz pianist Mulgrew passed away on May 29 at the age of 57.  Miller’s performances proved highly influential throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, beginning with stints with Betty Carter and Woody Shaw.  Miller went on to perform with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers throughout the mid-‘80s and Tony Williams until 1994.

Upon hearing the news, Stanford Jazz Workshop Jim Nadel wrote: “He was among the very greatest pianists of our times — a brilliant composer and improviser whose being was an expression of humility, kindness, wisdom, and truth. Mulgrew brought great joy into our lives and was an inspiration both  musically and personally. I feel blessed to have known him.”
