New England Conservatory Hosts Tribute To Taylor

This Friday, October 18, the New England Conservatory will host a reception celebrating Jazz50 with Jazz Advance: A Tribute to Cecil Taylor.

The evening begins with a pre-concert panel discussion celebrating NEC alum Cecil Taylor, Brown Hall. Panelists include Carl Atkins, founding chair of NEC’s Jazz Studies department, Marvin E. Gilmore, Jr., NEC alumnus and overseer, and Joe Morris, NEC faculty member, guitarist, composer, and ensemble leader. NEC Jazz Studies Chair Ken Schaphorst will moderate.

At 7:30 p.m., Jazz Advance: A Tribute to Cecil Taylor will take place in Jordan Hall. Taylor’s significant legacy will be honored with a series of piano solos featuring NEC faculty and alumni Ran Blake, Bruce Brubaker, Ethan Iverson, Matthew Shipp and Dan Tepfer. Faculty members Dominique Eade and Joe Morris will also perform, and the NEC Jazz Orchestra will perform arrangements of two pieces: Steve Lacy’s “Rain” and Taylor’s “Bulbs.”
