Philadelphia Celebrates Inaugural Jazz Fest

A newly formed nonprofit will present the first inaugural Philly Jazz Fest in September, led by Cape May Jazz Festival founders Woody Woodland and Carol Stone. The festival, headlined by Pieces of a Dream, will take place at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel Ballroom and will feature performances by Immanuel Wilkins Project, a session with vocalists Barbara Walker and Jeannie Brooks, sax greats Louis Taylor, Jesse Andrus, Ken Fowser; trumpeters Daud El-Bakara and Eddie Morgan; guitarists Darrell Daughtry and Jimmy O’Dell; keyboardist Will Brock and bassist Steve Green. Performances will also include guitarist Teddy Royal, the Denise King Quintet, tenor player Bootsie Barnes, trumpeter Duane Eubanks. The Philly Jazz Fest has plans to move into a 3-day weekend festival and become the preeminent Philadelphia jazz showcase restoring the greatness of the Mellon Jazz Festival of yesteryear with some of the jazz greats who got their start in Philadelphia.
