The DC Jazz Festival Announces Partnership with Dance Place

The DC Jazz Festival has partnered with Dance Place, part of Jazz in the ‘Hoods Presented by Events DC. Dance Place will showcase the second installment of “In Jazz We Trust: Music in Motion” on June 10 and 11.

Choreographer Princess Mhoon will direct “In Jazz We Trust: Music in Motion” and highlight the legacy of jazz that has endured in American history.

“Dance Place is delighted to partner with the DC Jazz Fest and the very talented Princess Mhoon for what promises to be a wonderful blending of jazz music and contemporary dance,” said Carla Perlo, the founding director of Dance Place. “The Dance Place Theater will make a perfect setting to showcase Ms. Mhoon’s choreography and DC Jazz Fests’ ‘Jazz in the ‘Hoods.'”

Mhoon’s credentials include being a Helen Hayes Nominee for Best Choreography in a Musical, and being named as one of the “26 African American Choreographers You Should Know” by the Huffington Post. She has also founded the Princess Mhoon Institute, with locations in D.C. and Maryland.

“This season, we are celebrating the compositions of Dizzy Gillespie as a part of Dizzy 100! I can’t think of a better jazz musician to create dance theatre. I have been inspired by his work since I was a little girl; that’s when I first heard ‘Night in Tunisia’ and fell in love,” said Mhoon.
